If you have a problem with scorpions, you can relax and be confident that we will take care of the problem rapidly and safely. We are very familiar with these scary looking invaders.
Scorpions are a highly feared pest in certain areas of Southwest Colorado and very commonly found invading homes in the outlying, dry areas of Mancos. Scorpions in our area are called “Bark Scorpions,” they do not normally burrow, but instead hide under bark, rocks, mulch, dead vegetation and yard debris, and cracks and crevices of structures. All Scorpions have a venomous sting, but most do not pose a serious threat to humans, and most stings do not require medical treatment. Scorpions are predators of other insects, but larger adults may hunt lizards and mice. They are very good climbers, I have witnessed scorpions climb stucco houses to access the attic space or to reach other insects on multiple occasions. They are nocturnal and hunt at night. They can eat a vast amount of food at a time, and they have a remarkable food storage system in their bodies that allows them to go without food for 6-12 months afterwards. Mating can occur in the fall, spring and early summer. The female gives live birth to a litter or “Brood” of between 10-45 young, which she carries on her back until their first molt. Adults can have several broods. Average life span for a scorpion is 3-8 years.

Scorpions love to hide under gravel during the daytime when it’s hot. The common xeroscape landscape in Mancos, CO provides great hiding and nesting areas right up against the structure with easy access inside. Keep other harborage areas away from the home such as mulch, wood piles, and overgrown shrubs Our Southwestern style houses allow for easy access inside through cracks in the stucco. This can sometimes be solved with caulking. Keeping insect populations down around the house will help drive them away to another location. Water sources indoors such as sinks and bathtubs may also be attractive. Scorpions have a very strong eco-skeleton, so it can take a long time for insecticides to take effect, if they have any effect at all. When Larry’s Pest Patrol accounts where scorpions are an issue, our goal is to provide a good exterior barrier around the home with an insecticide that has a fast knockdown, to have this barrier up before May, and continue it through August, as well as sealing major cracks around the exterior of the home and making sure weather stripping is in tact on all entryways.
At Larry’s Pest Patrol, we regularly help homeowners in Mancos and surrounding areas protect their homes from scorpions. Our technicians are trained to find signs of scorpion activity, effectively eliminate them from your home, and keep them away.
