Scorpions are a highly feared pest in certain areas of Southwest Colorado and very commonly found invading homes in the outlying, dry areas of Durango. Scorpions in our area are called “Bark Scorpions,” they do not normally burrow, but instead hide under bark, rocks, mulch, dead vegetation and yard debris, and cracks and crevices of structures. All Scorpions have a venomous sting, but most do not pose a serious threat to humans, and most stings do not require medical treatment. Scorpions are predators of other insects, but larger adults may hunt lizards and mice. They are very good climbers, I have witnessed scorpions climb stucco houses to access the attic space or to reach other insects on multiple occasions. They are nocturnal and hunt at night. They can eat a vast amount of food at a time, and they have a remarkable food storage system in their bodies that allows them to go without food for 6-12 months afterwards. Mating can occur in the fall, spring and early summer. The female gives live birth to a litter or “Brood” of between 10-45 young, which she carries on her back until their first molt. Adults can have several broods. Average life span for a scorpion is 3-8 years.

From the beginning, their communication and attention to detail were impressive.  Brian, the owner, called me the day before the scheduled treatment to make sure I was prepared and that everything was ready for the work to begin the following morning. Brian and Jay arrived on time on the day of treatment.  Before starting, Brian took the time to answer my questions and listen carefully to my concerns, particularly about the gravel path on the east side of the townhouse.  That path has both large and small gravel arranged in a specific way, and I wanted to make sure the treatment work did not disturb that arrangement. Brian and Jay were very accommodating.  They laid down plastic that I provided so the larger gravel could be kept separate from the smaller gravel while the work was being performed.  Jay dug the necessary trenches around the townhouse for the termiticide treatment and then took the extra time to return the gravel to its original arrangement when the work was complete. Matt, the service manager, also did an excellent job foaming the wall cavities.  He was very careful about where he made the necessary access holes in the drywall, choosing inconspicuous locations whenever possible.  After the foaming was completed, Matt went back and filled the holes he had made, leaving the work neat and unobtrusive. Brian did an equally good job where drilling into concrete was required.  He selected inconspicuous locations for the holes, pumped the termiticide into the drilled areas, and then went back afterward and filled the holes with cement so the finished work was clean and professional. Brian, Jay, and Matt worked very well together as a team.  They were professional, respectful of the property, careful with the details, and completed the job in a timely manner.  I was very pleased with both the quality of their work and the way they treated my property throughout the process. I would not hesitate to recommend Larry’s Pest Patrol to anyone needing professional termite treatment.
