Common Pest Problems in San Juan County NM Homes

August 3, 2026
Common Pest Problems in San Juan County NM Homes

San Juan County covers a wide geographic area, from river valleys and irrigated farmland to dry mesa tops and suburban neighborhoods. That variety of terrain means that pest pressures can differ from one property to the next, but several species cause problems across the entire county. Whether you live in Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield, or Kirtland, the pests described below are ones you are likely to encounter at some point. Larry’s Pest Patrol provides residential pest control throughout San Juan County and tailors each treatment to the conditions on your property.

Ants in Every Season

Ants are the single most common pest complaint in San Juan County. Multiple species are present, including pavement ants, harvester ants, and odorous house ants. They are active from early spring through late fall outdoors, but colonies that establish themselves near or under a home can remain active indoors year-round. Small infestations that go untreated tend to grow steadily, and over-the-counter sprays often kill only the visible foragers without reaching the colony. For a deeper look at how ant problems develop locally, see our post on why ant infestations happen in Farmington homes.

Scorpions

Bark scorpions are the primary species of concern in San Juan County. They are most active at night during warmer months and are commonly found in shoes, clothing left on the floor, and bedding. Scorpions are difficult to control with DIY methods because they can survive in very low-moisture environments and are resistant to many general-purpose insecticides. Targeted scorpion control treatments focus on reducing the insect prey that scorpions depend on while treating known harborage areas.

Rodents Along the River Corridors

Properties near the Animas River, San Juan River, and La Plata River deal with higher rodent pressure than homes in drier, more elevated areas. Mice and pack rats thrive along these corridors because of the available water, vegetation, and cover. From there, it is a short trip into garages, attics, and crawl spaces. Rodent problems in San Juan County tend to escalate during fall and winter when animals seek warmth, but river-adjacent properties may see activity in every season. Our post on top entry points rodents use in Farmington homes covers the most common access points to watch for.

Spiders

Both black widows and brown recluse spiders are found in San Juan County. Black widows are more common outdoors—in woodpiles, sheds, and meter boxes—while brown recluse spiders tend to establish themselves in undisturbed indoor areas like storage rooms and closets. Regular pest control reduces the insect populations that attract spiders, lowering the likelihood of encountering dangerous species inside the home.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches are the most problematic species indoors. They reproduce quickly, prefer warm and humid areas, and can contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria. Homes with any kind of moisture issue—dripping faucets, poor ventilation in bathrooms, or condensation in crawl spaces—are at higher risk.

Wasps, Hornets, and Other Stinging Insects

Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and mud daubers build nests on and around San Juan County homes from late spring through early fall. Nests under eaves, inside wall voids, and in outbuildings can grow large enough to become a safety hazard. Professional removal is recommended, especially for nests in hard-to-reach locations or near high-traffic areas.

Protecting Your San Juan County Home

The combination of desert conditions, river systems, and varied terrain makes San Juan County a particularly active region for pests. A quarterly or bi-monthly treatment plan addresses these overlapping pressures and keeps your home protected as conditions change through the year. Larry’s Pest Patrol did an excellent job treating our townhouse for termites. From the beginning, their communication and attention to detail were impressive. Brian, the owner, called me the day before the scheduled treatment to make sure I was prepared and that everything was ready for the work to begin the following morning. Brian and Jay arrived on time on the day of treatment. Before starting, Brian took the time to answer my questions and listen carefully to my concerns, particularly about the gravel path on the east side of the townhouse. That path has both large and small gravel arranged in a specific way, and I wanted to make sure the treatment work did not disturb that arrangement. Brian and Jay were very accommodating. They laid down plastic that I provided so the larger gravel could be kept separate from the smaller gravel while the work was being performed. Jay dug the necessary trenches around the townhouse for the termiticide treatment and then took the extra time to return the gravel to its original arrangement when the work was complete. Matt, the service manager, also did an excellent job foaming the wall cavities. He was very careful about where he made the necessary access holes in the drywall, choosing inconspicuous locations whenever possible. After the foaming was completed, Matt went back and filled the holes he had made, leaving the work neat and unobtrusive. Brian did an equally good job where drilling into concrete was required. He selected inconspicuous locations for the holes, pumped the termiticide into the drilled areas, and then went back afterward and filled the holes with cement so the finished work was clean and professional. Brian, Jay, and Matt worked very well together as a team. They were professional, respectful of the property, careful with the details, and completed the job in a timely manner. I was very pleased with both the quality of their work and the way they treated my property throughout the process. I would not hesitate to recommend Larry’s Pest Patrol to anyone needing professional termite treatment.

I had a technician come out to my Dads house that hasn’t been treated since the 60’s! Daniel did an amazing job and went above and beyond to treat all of the critters there. He set bait traps, sprayed around the property both inside and out. He went thru the entire outside of the house and got rid of 50 years of cobwebs. The entire house looked amazing when he was done! I couldn’t be happier with the service from Larry’ pest control. Highly recommend! Ask for Daniel!

James was my pest technician today. He was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. He made sure to address my main concerns (ants) and got rid of webs and wasp nests on my house. I also wanted to mention that I have had a good experience with the office staff when I call. The lady that answers is always friendly and ready to help! I’m glad I switched pest companies because Larry’s Pest Control has been great thus far!
